Morning Light Watercolour Still Life

Create one vertical 3:4 image: a top-down view of a small balcony table in bright morning sun, where a loose watercolour portrait of the woman in the attached photo is drying, clipped to a board with two black bulldog clips at the top corners. The sheet sits a little off-centre; beside it a steel tumbler of chai, a tin lid used as a palette with wet pools of rose, teal and warm brown, and a folded cotton rag with pigment marks. One hand holding a thin round brush enters from the lower right corner, the brush tip resting on the paper at the edge of the shoulder wash, well away from the face. In the painting she is turned away from the viewer at the shoulders and looks back over her left shoulder, head turned so the face reads three-quarter, chin level, eyes meeting the viewer directly as if looking at the painter, a small closed-lip smile. Hair gathered in a loose low bun with a few strands pulled out at the temple, held by a tortoiseshell claw clip; she wears a sage-green strappy top with a thin gold chain, both painted in quick transparent washes. Her exact facial features, proportions, eye shape and spacing, nose, lips, jaw, cheeks and skin tone are carried into the watercolour so she is instantly recognisable; the brushwork is loose but the face is hers, not a generic painted face. The washes run into the paper around the hair and the bare shoulder, the background of the painting is left as white paper with a few pink and lilac blooms drifting off the edge of the hair. The real sunlight comes from the upper left: the paper grain shows, the clips and the tumbler cast crisp short shadows across the sheet, the still-wet patches on the shoulder shine, and the hand and brush share the same hard light.
