1985 Roadside Portrait

A hill road pull-in, 1985 - mountains and a clouded sky behind. They lean back together against the wing of a red saloon car, waist-up, a clear hand's width of air between their arms, heads at different heights and neither face overlapping. HIM: a stonewash denim jacket open over a white vest, blue jeans, a brown belt; both hands in his jeans pockets to the knuckles. HER: a teal and magenta colour-block windbreaker over a white tee, high-waisted jeans; one hand resting on the car wing, fingers countable, the other arm down. Both wear wayfarer sunglasses hooked at the collar, never on their faces, all four eyes visible. His hair full and curly, hers in big permed curls, both swept clear of the forehead, both hairlines exact. Both look off to camera-left down the valley, faces held three-quarter, easy smiles. Open daylight from camera-left keys BOTH faces frontally and brightest with clear catchlights in all four eyes. Vertical 4:5.

Shot on a 1980s 35mm SLR: softer period lens, gentle contrast, real grain, warm print colour. PRINT: white nibbled torn edges all round, one soft vertical crease, warm faded colour with a faint magenta-pink shift as the cyan dye fades first. Damage, grain and haze on the border and background only, NEVER on a face. The face is the sharpest, brightest thing in frame.
